The Black Friday $Billion
Posted 28 November 2012
If you’ve got friends across the Atlantic, you’ll know all about Thanksgiving. A national holiday instigated by Abraham Lincoln in 1876 during the American Civil war, it is celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday in November. This national day of “thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens” has become synonymous with celebration, American Football, family gatherings and turkey.
It is also a key time for American retailers. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is traditionally seen as marking the unofficial beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Stores typically open as early as 5am on what has become the busiest shopping day of the year. Black Friday is essentially Boxing Day on steroids, and this year’s sales figures have proved no exception, with online sales on this day passing the $1 billion mark for the first time. You won’t be surprised to hear that Amazon yet again topped the rankings as the highest-grossing E-Commerce site.
The rise of E-Commerce has been a dramatic one, and has taken website design by storm. The early days were marked by consumer indifference and uncertainly about the security of entering personal details online, but today a world without online sales is almost unthinkable. As a web design company we have certainly seen this, with a growing number of clients looking to add E-Commerce functionality to their sites. The ability to browse products from the comfort of a home or office and the simplicity of checking out and arranging shipping has resulted in a significant shift in the way that we think about shopping. The fact that supermarkets have invested so much in championing their online shopping services is indicative of the changes that have taken place.
