ver the last fifteen or so years at VizionOnline, we’ve seen a whole lot of different eCommerce SEO trends within digital marketing come and go. From keyword spamming to a ton of various bizarre tricks, superstitions and ideas, we’ve seen it all. Here are three terrible SEO trends that we’re very glad to be saying goodbye to.

Content Spam! Duplicate and Quality Versus Quantity

            Content marketing is vital, as the adage goes, content is king. However, duplicate, mistake-riddled and spammy content is not king. It’s not useful, and worse, it doesn’t do websites much good at all when it comes to eCommerce SEO trends. This is why consistent, quality content is so vital when it comes to great SEO.

All websites that want to thrive should be regularly posting quality content, including business updates, insights into their industry, tips and tricks and a thousand other relevant posts. These can provide vital linking opportunities as well as useful content to share on the business’s social media pages, but only if the content is high quality, otherwise you’re just showing people business flyers riddled with spelling mistakes and errors. Embarrassing and ineffective. No Silly Tricks, Future-Proofing is Often Simply Quality in eCommerce SEO Trends

            In the old days, eCommerce SEO trends were all about cheap tricks like keyword stuffing and the like. You still sometimes see some of these tricks, but we’re here to say that this is a mistake, and it’s not going to be around for much longer. As Google and the other search engines continue to get cleverer, they’re going to get less and less tolerant of cheap, black hat SEO techniques, in favour of quality optimisation, designed to both build a search engine friendly website and a user-friendly website.

The fact is, quality speaks louder than almost anything else, so if you’re going to prioritise anything, prioritise building a quality website, with great website design, development, copy and branding. Then SEO optimisation on top of that and you’ll be onto a winner.

Failing to Prioritise Mobile

            This really is an old issue at this point, but we’re still coming across the occasional website that fails to prioritise mobile. Fortunately, business owners are starting to understand that mobile browsing has almost completely taken over the internet at this point. So failing to prioritise this just isn’t an option anymore. Even for the most technical, niche of websites, it should always be a huge priority. This is less of an eCommerce SEO trend, more of a simple reality for the internet in 2021.

This is something we’re really glad to be stepping away from. The fact is mobile-friendly website design isn’t just about appealing to mobile users. It’s about building the most versatile website possible. We’re talking about a website that performs just as well on every device, optimised for slow internet speeds. This is a more versatile, hardier site, which makes for greater possibilities with new tech, such as AR and VR.
