What is HTML5 Web Design and Why is it so Important?

Browsing the web and using the internet for business and leisure have become a normal part of all of our lives. Unsurprisingly, not many of us really understand just how the internet works, just as many of us aren’t really sure how a petrol engine or television function. It’s certainly not a problem; we can all benefit from the internet without having to know every detail about how the web is constructed.

There are times, however, when it’s very useful to know when technology has changed.

Let’s take the petrol engine analogy. In the light of increasingly strict emissions standards car manufacturers have made great advances in engine development. Today’s engines are significantly smaller, lighter, more powerful and more efficient that those made a few years ago. When significant progress is made in way that something is manufactured, it’s important to let customers know that things have moved forwards. This gives customers the option of benefiting from the technological improvements, and helps the business to demonstrate why their work is so important.

There are several parallels when it comes to web design.

Most internet users are aware that web designers use various forms of code to construct web pages. One of the roles of a web developer is to take a design and turn it into a fully functioning website that delivers the necessary functionality to the end user.

HTML – or HyperText Markup Language – have been used for many years to develop web pages. What we refer to as HTML is actually HTML4 and has been in use since the late 1990s. It is the code – or language – that determines what a web page looks like in practice.

However, HTML has traditionally been fairly limited because it is designed to deliver static web pages. Web designers have therefore used a variety of additional plugins such as Flash and CSS to add more dynamic features to websites. This has meant that websites have been built using multiple frameworks.

There are various reasons why this isn’t necessarily the best way to build a website. The combination of features used to built a website has sometimes meant that cross-browser functionality is very poor, simply because there are more variables and it’s harder to get right. You’ll also be aware that plugins such as Flash need to be regularly updated. This can be very frustrating because you may need to download the latest version before viewing a website.

Now, though, HTML5 has arrived. This October the final version of HTML5 was standardised by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)

What is HTML5 Web Design and Why is it so Important?

Very simply, HTML5 web design uses HTML5 to build websites in a more efficient way, delivering the latest functionality without having to use multiple plugins. This makes websites faster, more reliable and more consistent across different browsers. With a range of new markup tools, HTML5 allows web designers to integrate different components of a website, including video and applications, in an efficient and integrated way.

This is great news for internet users. HTML5 websites have the potential to be faster, lighter and less prone to crashing. It’s also great news for mobile internet users; HTML5 websites use less battery and easier to access.

We’re excited about this ongoing development as we continue to benefit from HTML5 to make websites faster, simpler and more reliable.
