Do you ‘+1’ this blog?
Posted 13 April 2011
Google is launching ‘+1’ – a new social search tool which Google says gives ‘recommendations when you want them’.
Shorthand for ‘this is pretty cool’ and ‘you should check this out’, some have said +1 is a rival of Facebook’s like button. Well, they do seem very similar…
Anyone with a Google profile will be able to +1. From recipes to holidays to your local hairdresser, by clicking +1 you are telling your friends and family (on your contacts list) what you recommend.
+1s come up in search results, like this (below) and on both Google and non-Google sites across the web.
Google says: “The beauty of +1’s is their relevance—you get the right recommendations (because they come from people who matter to you), at the right time (when you are actually looking for information about that topic) and in the right format (your search results)”.
+1s are saved in a separate tab on your Google profile which you can choose to share or keep as a personal record of things you like.
Although +1 is still in its early stages (around 2% of Google’s US users are trialling it before it’s rolled out) it has the potential to be a really useful feature, making our online decisions a whole lot easier.
We +1 the +1!
Check it out in all its glory in the Google promo video below.
