With the online retail sector growing rapidly, the demand for high-quality e-commerce web design has also continued to rise. The way that we think about e-commerce website design has changed significantly, with various new industry standards emerging.
A notable change has been the increasing popularity of responsive e-commerce website design. In the early days of smartphones and tablets, larger online retailers developed mobile-specific sites for their mobile customers, whilst smaller companies relied upon making their desktop sites as accessible as possible for mobile users. This is achieved by simplifying various components of the website design.
Traditionally, e-commerce web designs have featured a number of search categories in addition to the site’s search engine. In developing minimalist sites the web designer endeavours to strip down the amount of text on a given page. This is also influenced by mobile e-commerce design, where there simply isn’t the space for numerous menu options. Instead, a clear search bar and well categorised menus are key.
Typography is another helpful tool in achieving the clean design required. Instead of filling the page with both information and branding, typography combines the two. In other words, the carefully chosen typefaces are both part of the design and part of the content. This results in a simplified, clean look which is much more compatible with mobile browsers.
A further key ingredient is making more room for photography. Instead of leading with information about the products, the web designer draws the visitor’s attention with large, quality photographs that communicate the quality of the product. The relevant information can then be displayed once the potential customer has clicked through to the product.
