turner

It’s that time of the year again when the notorious Turner Prize exhibition starts. Famous for it’s ability to split the public this year we have Enrico David,  Roger Hiorns, Lucy Skaer and Richard Wright.
It seems a little too close to call this year, but Lucy Skaer’s work has proved a favourite with us. She makes films and scultpures that use found material and take these things on a journey to the ultimate end as pieces of art.
The exhibition runs from 6th october until 3 Januray with the prize being awarded 7th December – let’s hope they keep Madonna away again this year…..

win7

Yes – it’s that time again – a new version of Windows in unleashed onto the world. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we had Windows Vista launched in a fanfare of excitement. So what’s so great about Windows 7 I hear you ask? Well to be honest, from what we can glean from the blogosphere, it seems that Windows 7 is really what Windows Vista should have been done. Figures for the uptake of windows vista are interesting with it receiving alot of bad press at the time for being slow, incompatible with older software and hardware and generally not too great. Lots of people are still running windows XP as a result.

So what is new? Well the key is in the tagline ‘Your PC simplified’. It’s a kind of stripped down OS – it loads faster, it shuts down faster and it works much more efficiently than previous versions of windows. Sure there are a host of other changes intended to make your life easier – a natty new task bar amongst several UI updates, but really it’s all about under the bonnet speed and from first impressions, it seems to do what Windows Vista never did.

It’s going to have to be good, however, as Apple have made great advances with their OS X – snow leopard, the latest incarnation is stripped back, quick and gorgeous to look at. Don’t forget too that the second half of next year will see Google Chrome OS launched …..

Tate Modern’s new exhibition celebrates the more materialistic side to art.  Andy Warhol’s famous words : ‘Good business is the best art’ is something of a mantra to many modern artists and it’s this fascination with media, celebrity and business that the exhibition explores. Jeff Koons, Damian hurst and lots of young british artists are shown along with the progression of art towards business from Andy Warhol. Well worth a look with some great pieces.

And as an aside – if you like Jeff Koons, you can see one of his enormous blow up bunnies in Covent Garden at the moment … it’s quite surreal.

Anish Kapoor

We’re very excited about the new Anish Kapoor exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. The turner prize winning artist is showing previously unseen works alongside some of his more recognisable works. Kapoor is famed for his large scale thought provoking works especially his large polished sculptures that can have quite a disorienting effect upon the viewer. The courtyard shows one such sculpture – Tall tree and the eye – see above, which is fascinating to stare into.

The exhibition runs until 11th December.

Wave Hello

wave
Google has launched (to a select group of developers and testers) it’s all new browser based email ‘basher’ Google Wave.

Lars Rasmussen – Wave’s co-creator “A wave is equal parts conversation and document, where people can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.”  In essence he has given himself the brief to re-design email as if we were creating it now. After all we’ve had email now for so many years we’ve forgotten how one dimensional it actually is.

The beauty of wave – as far as we can see – is that you are not stuck to a single ‘thread’ or by a fixed number of senders and recipients. Instead you can invite people to join the ‘wave’ and they then have access to all conversations within it. Added to that is the ability to go back and edit different parts of the wave – even to shield certain parts of the wave from other people.

Whether it takes off or not is really down to how many people start to use it. It goes without saying that it is an amazing tool in communications – really bringing email kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

We’re still waiting for our invite to use it and we’ll let you have a more in depth review when we do….. anyone out there with an invitation?
